72 Idle jet pluggin....and pluggin...and pluggin

Post by majicwrench »

Several times a summer I have to pull and clean my idle jet to restore the idle and off-idle response. I'm good at it :) and it just takes a couple minutes to have it idling like a kitten purring. This spring it is getting RIDICULOUS. Almost every drive. Cleaned it last night (tiny piece of ???? in jet), purring, happy Keith, pulled it out of shop to park in shed and plugged AGAIN!! Gonna pull carb apart and see if it is full of stuff. Grrrr. Just venting, and I'll let you know what I find.
PS re-sealed tank a couple years ago.

Hi,

I'm very curious to learn if your taking apart of the carb taught you anything.
I've had EXACTLY the same nuisance with mine.
On the course of say 500 mi over the last two weeks, I've had three standstills already: engine gone dead in idle. I manage to drve around still, by manipulating the choke in idle, but that's no fun.
One time, my mechanic had to remove a droplet of water from the idle jet the second time it was a hair, feather or so...
Now it's cooling down in my garage, need to cool off myself...

Like your mentioning of your work on the tank, I have no clue where this clogging sensibility comes from. All I know is that I had it in for body work this winter and the guys had to take the tank out too. Who knows...

Anyway, if you get any wiser, let me know !
