My wife has been out of town the last week or so and the kids have been in and out, so I've been able to spend a good amount of time under the hood lately!
Here's what I've done ('82 FI):
1. Checked the relatively new NGK plugs. #1,2,4 pretty much white. #3 brown (fuel injector air leak?)
2. Compression test: Ranges from 168 - 170 (sounds high?)
3. checked exhaust valve tappet clearance: .010 - 0.016 (looking for valve tool so I can order new shims)
4. New vacuum advance
5. Set correct gap for magnetic pickup
6. Removed and cleaned auxiliary air regulator
7. New hoses to/from auxiliary air regulator
8. Cleaned FI grounds
9. Detected bad coolant temp sensor (still need to order new one)
10. Adjusted TPS
11. Replaced O2 Sensor
12. Set idle and timing.
13. Installed vacuum gauge in place of clock (measurements look good)
All in all, its been a fun week. After all that, I don't notice a bit of performance difference.
Next week or so:
1. Order new tappet shims
2. Check fuel injectors for air leaks and spray pattern
3. Replace rubber hoses that I thought were steel (large hose from block to intake)
4. replace coolant temp sensor
5. Refine timing
6. install test pipe and replace center muffler with a straight pipe.
Hopefully next week I can report a performance increase.
