Carb question

Post by Mirabelli78 »

Hey guys, i have a 78 with a water choked carb. 2 questions
1. Can i t into any coolant line such as the one righ to the right of the intake going into the block?

2. I bought an electric choke motorcraft carb, would i be able to remove the electric choke off of it and swap out the water choke?

The 3 outer screws look like they are spaced the same way....any surprises inside?

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh question 3....what hoses hook up to the fast idle connection and bowl vapour vent on the water weber?

Thanks for your help

The proper place to run the water choke is to hook one side to the right side of the intake manifold, there is a port there, and the other to the pipe that runs under the exhaust manifold. Both are easy to get to, even if they don't look it you can push the hoses on and run a clamp down them and you're done. I have also run the water choke to a coolant "T" as used on the FI Spiders, which interchange with earlier models.

Probably not. Honestly the water choke works just as well as the electric; if you want an electric choke Weber then get a DFEV.

Which three screws, the bowl screws?

You may (or may not) still have the fast idle capsule on the firewall. If so then that the hose running from it runs into the fast idle connection which sticks out of the side of the carb. If you don't have it then block it off at the carburetor.

The bowl vapor vent is pretty obvious, it is the third nipple on the carb bowl. The other two are obviously fuel - they are near the brass nut (which holds a small fuel filter).

You can read this, too, it has a lot of ADF/ADFA information: http://www.artigue.com/fiat/tuning-book

You're talking about the choke? It has a big spring inside that heats up when water gets hot and turns a cam. The cam sets the throttle position (high/medium/low) and regulates the choke flap (closed/half/open) proportionally to control the air/fuel mixture.

A water choke works like this:

Engine cold and off.
Press gas pedal to floor.
Start car - do not press pedal (you shouldn't have to if it is running correctly).
Allow car to warm up.

Remember these cars are from an era that you let a car warm up for a few minutes before driving it. Allow the car a few minutes and the choke will do its job.

ok, so does it mater what side of the choke the hoses are or as long as its flowing, its fine?

as for teh fast idle, I do have that line and its hooked up.

The only port left on the carb is the vapour vent...does that usually hook up to the outlet on the oil/vapour separator?

I hooked up a long hose with a breather on the outlet so do I just plug that port on the carb or where else do I route that?

I will keep the water choke for now, if I ever want to swap, I will get an Empii from Mark Allison.

once this is figured out, then on to ignition and time to test fire..... almost there

thanks guys

There is no direction to the water lines, they can plug into either one. The vapor line hooks to the charcoal canister mounted on the fender wall. it is a black box with a vent on top.

Yes. I would venture to guess that 90% of the cars running out there don't have one, and 99% of them the canister isn't working anyway.

Do I plug the port or leave it open?
