relay set burnt out/ fuel pump related???

Post by rdrtech »

Hey Folks, Just thought I would run this by you for info and/or your input. Sorry if it seems long-winded but I am trying to convey all pertinent info.

I just had my first problem with my Spider. My wife called me into the garage about some noises coming from the Spider. I get there and hear the fuel pump going with a variable speed. Oh Great! the fuel pump is going!!! Opening the trunk to disconnect the battery, I could also hear fuel 'doin' the loop' from tank -> Pump > rail > back to tank via the pressure regulator. I thought the Fuel pump was not supposed to start until the ignition key was engaged and the engine was cranking???

After getting the keys I hooked up the battery and the fuel pump did not start. I turned the ignition on (did not crank the engine) and the fuel pump did not start. I believe this is how it is supposed to behave.

I turned the key to start the motor. It started for 1 sec and then quit after what sounded like fuel starvation. During this time the fuel pump never started. I tried about five more times with the same result.
I then turned off vehicle, removed the key, disconnected the battery and put the vehicle on jackstands. After all was safe I checked the connections on the fuel pump. Electrical and Fule hose connections all looked good. I then hooked up the battery. This is when all the fun starts.

The fuel pump started up with its varying speeds. I went under to give it a tap or two. Then I smelt a very familiar BAD !!! BAD!!! odour. Popping up from beneath the Spider I could see smoke coming from the cockpit. I quickly disconnected the battery and tried to find the source of the smoke. Both garage doors were open and the breeze was swirling the smoke around making it very difficult to find the source.
I finally found that the relay set up by the ECM had a great big burn mark. See the picture here http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k266/ ... ayassy.jpg
I suspect that the relay unit itself was going bad, unless the fuel pump was drawing too much current.

I plan on testing the fuel pump by itself, expecting about 33 lbs pressure with no regulator attached. I will be measuring the DC current as well, anyone know how much these draw? I will also be testing the switch in the AFM. Anything else I should be testing before installing a new relay unit? I am really hoping the ECM is still good.

Besides Bruce's Parts bin, can anyone give me a recommendation on other sources for this relay set

So for now the Spider is sitting on it's jack stands awaiting parts and a bit of troubleshooting. Any and all comments or helpfull advice is more than welcome.

Thanks,

Carl
