Timing belt slipped?

Post by Rascal »

I was trying to turn the engine with a a wrench on one of the cams, but it may have slipped when I pulled hard to get past a compression point.
I took out the plugs and now I can only turn the engine a small ways back and forth before it hits something.
There is a click, clunk noise at one point as I turn the engine back and forth between the bind points.
I can't turn it to where the TDC notch is on the crank. I'm not sure what I should do next.

edit: it's a 1976 spider 1800 with an air pump (disconnected)

in the vein of closing the barn door after the cows have escaped, don't use a single cam bolt to turn the engine!
You're going to have to loosen the t-belt tensioner and remove the belt. You should be able to turn the engine slightly in the opposite direction. You'll have to be gentle so you don't bend valves, but you should be able to turn the cams and crank in small increments until you get to tdc. Don't force anything, if you feel resistance, stop and move the cams slightly until the crank turns freely

I loosened the tensioner and removed the belt and was easily able to line everything up.
Slipped the belt back on and using a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt, the engine turns smoothly with no sign of binding.

I'll put on a new timing belt and tensioner before I proceed.
