How do the door checks go bad?

I know the vendors sell these for like $20 each but has anyone fixed their old ones? I'm not really sure what goes wrong with them, do they lose their tension or metal wear down?

When I got my car 2 years ago they were in place but broken into 2 pieces. You probably know this, but if they're broken or missing, a strong wind can blow the door open and crease it against the fender.
