Noisy tapping and black soot!

Post by spinningsal »

Can anyone enlighten a couple of newcomers, Tony and Sally.
Our '74 spider has started showing black soot in the exhaust and has also become quite noisy from what appears to be one of the cams.
Any thoughts - are they related?
thanks

they could be related, but some investigation is required. How does the engine run? Is it smooth with normal power, or misfiring and sluggish?
I'd certainly look into both issues, check the valve clearance first and also look for an exhaust leak at the head to manifold area. An exhaust leak at one port can sound like a tapping noise.
I'd also look at the choke operation and make sure it's opening fully. If the choke is okay, check to make sure the idle cutoff solenoid is tight, and that the carb float hasn't failed

Thanks Mark,

turns out they weren't related. A bit "rich" for the black soot and an overly cautious ear for the noise! Now running sweet.

sometimes we run skitish when it comes to noises and problems.

unless you have a Concourse winning show car, you are gonna have various squeeks and rattles.

Or, is that just me and my car?

Probably a loose nut behind the wheel in your case, Mike. :D
