Engine replacement (1608<-->1608)

Post by Fredrik Jancke »

Hi,

I´m replacing the engine in my ´72 Spider (1608) with a rebuilt one (same kind). Is there something else I should replace when I have the engine out? I´m thinking the rubber things (don´t know the english word) the engine rests on, and the same for the gearbox. Anything else? And since I don´t know yet if the replacement engine is a dual-carb like mine or something else(?) - would "something else" require changing anything difficult? (I´m not doing the work myself - I leave that to a qualified mechanic, but I will still have to supply the parts needed). Or should I in that case move the carbs from the old engine to the new one? And one more question... My gaswire-linkage is hooked up on a metal piece held in place by the same screws that holds the covers (picture at http://www.jancke.se/spider/Bild7.jpg). Looks like something home-made (by PO). Problem is that I have a hard enough problem keeping the covers in place without this contraption. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better way to arrange this? I don´t want to transfer the problem to the new engine if it´s also going to be dual-carb.

Best regards,

replacing the engine mounts is a good idea. Also with the engine out you should inspect the clutch assy and replace it if it's worn. Mounting the cable bracket on the cam cover bolt isn't the best idea, but changing it will require fabricating a new mount. Are you putting in a used engine?
I'd swap your dual carbs onto the new engine if I were doing the job

I agree with Mark. Swapping in those dual carbs would be a must on my list.

Any and all rubber tubes, hoses and connectors should be a great idea as well.

And my vote would include a new clutch and clutch cable unless they were recently done.

Great!

Thanks!

It´s truly amazing how helpful you guys in here are! :)

I will absolutely follow your advice and get new mounts, hoses etc. and a new clutch. I´ll also try to figure something out regarding the cable bracket. The engine I´m hoping to buy is supposed to have been rebuilt about teen years ago, and not really used since then. I´m awaiting more information from the seller...

(New words learnt today - bracket & engine mounts - I´ll try to remember them!)

Best regards,

Fredrik
