Timing belt too big!

Post by Doctorwire »

I just tried to install a new timing belt on my 1978 spider (1800). I put the new tensioner bearing on and then the belt. Even with the tensioner in the "relaxed" or fully right position, the belt is too loose. I tried the old belt again (thinking it might be the tensioner) and it fit fine.
I'm guessing they shipped me the wrong belt. Are the belts longer on the smaller block engines? or the 2.0L perhaps?

The 2L Engines are taller so you must of been shipped the 2L belt

A 2L belt has 148 teeth while a 1.8L belt has 146. Sometimes there are numbers printed on the belt with that number sequence somewhere in a longer string of numbers, or you got to count the teeth.

@ Manoa Matt, yep that would be the case! The # on the belt is 41148. I double checked and i did order the right belt, they just sent me the wrong one! Thanks for the input...now i can check the new one before going through the trouble on putting it on!
