You don't need to remove the crank pulley to do the timing belt.

however to lock a motor theres a trick i use
cut a peice of rope 15 inches
remove a spark plug
push the rope inside the cilinder then go loosen the nut
DONT DO THIS WITHOUT A BELT ON!!!
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

If you absolutely need to remove the nut, there may be better ways, but this worked for me.
I had to remove the radiator to gain more clearance and had a bar welded to the socket for more leverage. I jambed the flywheel with a screwdriver so the car wouldn't move, then I made sure when I bumped the engine, the bar would hit on something solid to loosen the nut. BUT this is not necessary for a timing belt replacement.

The seals are leaking so i wanted to replace them while i was in there. I will need to remove the pulley right? Thanks for the replies. I dont know for sure that the crank seal is leaking as I havent pulled the cover yet but i put some dye in the oil and will be checking it out with the blacklite/glasses kit that my friend has. So far i can see that the oil pan gasket is leaking for sure...hence my other posting about the bolts.
