Making progress... kinda.

Post by christine13b »

Hello, fellas! Finally got my 74 running "well"... ok, kinda well. Here's what I have done to it... I have the Empi 32/36 DFEV on it now with the 20mm spacer, have changed over to "The Ignitor", instead of points, got all that emissions crap off of it (don't need anything in KY really, except a cat... and that's more of a guideline than an enforced rule), EVERYTHING is basically capped off, I have a new fuel pump, fresh gas, new plugs (Changed back to Champion because the Autolites made it run like crap), and set the ignition timing at 0, per Fiat specs. So here's the deal... car starts up great, auto choke opens, it idles well, runs great... all is well. The only major problem is that on hard acceleration, it bogs around 4500 RPM. Then it runs like crap for a few seconds. If I let off the gas and let it get back down to idle, it calms down and goes back to normal. If I stay on the gas, there is bogging, jerking, and a ton of other embarrassing things. It doesn't do the bogging in the garage. I can run the tach nearly up to red line and it's smooth as silk. Just when I am driving. I'm not great with carbs, so I may have messed something up playing around in there. Oh... one more thing... there is a bit of run-on when I shut the key off. I am not very concerned because it doesn't last but a second or two, but I didn't know if the two would be related. It idles great at 850... smooth as silk. Any thoughts?

You should not have any (run on) when you turn ignition off. Maybe running to rich but I will pass on to more knowing people than I.

run on is normally caused by an idle speed that is too high. I'd set the ignition timing to 10btdc and that will allow you to close the throttle some by backing out the idle speed screw. That will lessen the chance of fuel being drawn into the manifold at idle.
Your bogging sounds like low fuel pressure. Make sure the hoses on the inlet side of the pump are in excellent condition. That means the hoses from the tank and connected to the pump

I agree with both of Mark's points.
BTW, a '74 should not have a converter, unless it is a California model. On the 49-state cars, in the driver's door jamb is a sticker that states "Non-catalyst".

Thanks Joe... ME TOO! I will follow your advice for sure, Mark. Thank you so much! I should be able to free up some time in the next few days to get cracking on that and I will let you guys know what I find. You are right... I don't have a cat, Vandor... was just trying to make the point that emissions in Kentucky are way less strict than most states. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with passing tests, etc. That sounds awful.

cat converters weren't required in Calif until 1975

I went ahead and replaced the line going to the fuel filter from the tank, and the one going from the tank to the metal line. Also set the timing at 10btdc and decreased the idle a bit. Still se run on. Like half a second, but much improved. It's still bogging down though. What else could it be?! I pulled the plugs out. They were very black so I threw se new ones in. How could they get so black so quickly? It's not oil soaked black. Its like carbon deposit black.

You say you replaced the fuel pump. What's the pressure set at?

I have no idea. My "mechanic" put one in it. It says AU2635. Doesn't appear to be adjustable. I don't know much about fuel pumps. Could it be too low psi?

no
low pressure pumps are 4psi
electric pumps are 35psi

there are low eletric as well
and fuel regulators with gauges too

"Bogging" on hard accel is often due to lack of fuel. The pressure does not really matter here, it is a volume issue. Need to "T" a pressure gauge with a long hose into fuel line at carb, then secure it so it can be seen while accelling hard. If pressure drops when accel, you have a problem.
THis could be caused by loads of things from clogged sock/filers to cracked/damaged line to pump issues.

Joe... you are a genius. Extra large fuel filter = driving like a dream. Its so much faster in the high RPM range when it isn't bogging down and cutting out! Had a great drive this morning, and it was quite enjoyable! I must say, you guys sure are giving me an education. I appreciate it! Now just gotta make the inside look pretty!
