Carburetor Advice

Post by maser88 »

Recently purchased a '76 124 Spider and need some advice about what to do with my carburetor situation. The previous owner swapped out the stock carb with a weber DGV, which was fine but the choke assembly was completely removed. So I purchased a used DGEV, but ran into some installation issues because the electric choke doesn't fit the overhead cam assembly. I believe the intake manifold is stock. So now I am not sure what to do, a weber DFV would fit, but used ones are hard to come by and my throttle linkage has already been modified to rotate counter-clockwise.

I have been looking at the Ford Pinto's DGV Holley Carbs, it appears similar to the original Weber DGV except the choke is on the other side. Anyone have experience with these? Is there a better alternative?

The DGV style carbs are not easy to fit onto Spiders, I have no idea why people try, when the DFV/DFEV fits real easy.
Sell your DGVs and get a DFEV, life will be easier :-)

The DFVs have clockwise linkage right? How was the throttle cable originally setup in these cars to rotate clockwise? Right now I have a few extra plates bolted to the frame and intake manifold to rig it for counter clockwise rotation, and I can't see how it ever went the opposite direction since the cable comes out of the firewall far to the driver's side.

I hate this setup. I wish there were a simpler, nicer-looking way.

Actually the '76's ADFA carb had a drum that extended from the carb shaft, but the pictured setup was used late '77 to 80, and is the one that works with the DFV type carbs.

Where can you get that bracket with the pivot? I'm assuming the pedal assembly can remain the same.

I probably have one that has been zinc plated and looks real good. Not the cheapest, but looks great. PM me if interested.
You will also need the cable.

you will need to change the intake cam cover to install that bell crank and if you still have the emissions equipment that becomes a problem. The 76 cam cover incorporated the egr valve and the cover that accomodates the bell crank does not have provisions for the egr

Here is my cam cover. It looks as though there are already holes threaded that would allow me to mount the bracket. What do you think?

Removing the EGR valve is fine, i'm already in the process of doing it, but it would be nice to keep the current cam cover.
