Most desirable engine setup for a Spider
Most desirable engine setup for a Spider
I've read through a lot of what the internet has to offer regarding the best combinations of blocks, heads, manifolds, (single) carbs, etc, and from what I understand, I believe I have just the right components on hand to do this.... But I'm not sure.
I have the '79 2L block, standard specs. I have the head from a '74, along with what I believe is the '74 intake manifold.
I have a 32/36 DFEV/AV carb, and I have an aftermarket tube-type 4-2-1 header. I have the electronic ignition from the 2L to go into the head.
Does this sound right?
The BLOCK
The HEAD
The INTAKE

That is a good combination if you are on a budget. Of course you can get a lot more power if you drop a few grand on the engine

For budget bolt on, I'd think you would be noticing a difference. Might suggest if you are going to change the clutch that you look into shaving a few pounds off the flywheel while it is getting resurfaced.

Existing exhaust manifold-
One I want to use-
Of course, all parts will be cleaned up before install.

Don't throw away the stock exhaust setup. Those headers can be a pain, you may want to reinstall the stock system when you get tired of it leaking at the joints... The stock setup you have is a "4 into 2 into 1", which is really pretty decent.

Yes, the stock manifold is a decent 421, but it has 3 broken bolts in it. I'll save it, for sure, in case it turns out that you're correct, and I can't deal with the inevitable leaks. Thanks!

that combination is a good starting point

Unfortunately, I don't see how my car will be able to pass emissions here in Phoenix after I get it all done.

It is my understanding that once the car is 25 years old it doesnt have to go thru emissions.
Re: Most desirable engine setup for a Spider
From what I understand, in phoenix, all cars newer than 1967 must go thru emissions...

Re: Most desirable engine setup for a Spider
the escape hatch is the "collectable" exemption. I have talked to others in the area that took their "Hagerty" type insurance to the DMV and that made the car collectable. Mine is still not roadable yet, so cant give you 1st hand experience.

I could do the Hagerty thing, but I'd like to make it a daily driver. So my only real option is to put all the emissions equipment on it to make it pass, then remove all that and put it into storage till next time.
