Hi,
Haynes manual says starter has to come out to remove transmission, and engine has to come out to remove flywheel.
...Seriously?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Transmission Replacement
I removed the starter without removing the tranny....cause you kinda have to. Flywheel can come out with the engine in place...just have to wedge a screwdriver in one of the flywheel holes and lodge against something so when removing the flywheel bolts...the flywheel does not turn.
Personal opinion - I removed the tranny with the engine in place and the flywheel. Then I decided to remove the engine. Like most have said....if I had to do it over again, I would leave the tranny attached and pull everything at once. Pulling the engine was a piece of cake. I did it by myself. With tranny attached...2 people would be easier, but not needed if you have a load leveler.

Re: Transmission Replacement
hello i just did a timing cover on my ford
when it came to stoping the motor
i remembered somewhere that you
can use a rope 12 inches long in the spark plug hole
leave 3 inches out and slowly turn it untill it stops the motor
it worked like a charm
i used nylon

Re: Transmission Replacement
How the heck does that work?
I would be terrified of feeding a rope into the sparkplug hole!

Re: Transmission Replacement
This technique can be found in auto and small engine repair manuals. The rope takes up space in the cylinder, as the piston raises it hits the rope and when the rope squishes enough, stops the engine from turning. It doesn't hurt anything at all.

Re: Transmission Replacement
or you can just use an impact wrench, then the bolts will come out no problem

Re: Transmission Replacement
You can use a $10 flywheel locking tool, which will also be handy for when you're putting the flywheel back on.
The best priced one I found is on ebay which suits some Citroens and Fiat motors.

Re: Transmission Replacement
I've seen it done on a car and I've done it myself on small 2 stroke engines, but unless the piston is on the compression/power stroke I wouldn't guarantee you won't bend a valve.rlux4 wrote:This technique can be found in auto and small engine repair manuals.
