enigine friction?? sound

Post by lm48 »

I am going crazy with my restoration due to an engine noise. When I start the car the noise is not there. After a quick acceleration if you watch the video clip you can hear the noise. The noise will go on and off but will be on for minutes at the time. The car is not street drivable but I did go around the block few times. The oil pressure is ok, the head had a valve job, and the engine bottom is original. I also engage the transmission few times to see if the noise will disappear, no changes. Any suggestion on how to locate the noise source?

Need to get a long hunk of vacuum hose or a stephascope. I would also take off the Vbelt and see if it goes away.

I got a cheap stethoscope from Harbor freight tools but I did not locate the noise. I will need to spend more time and go section at the time. Great idea with the v belt. I am concern for overheating.

You don't need to run it long without the belt to know if it or one of the items it runs is the culprit.

I would be worried about your cam tensioner bearing, is it new or an old one?

Sounds like an exhaust gasket leak. Mine has the same sound, the manifold was loose and destroyed the gasket.

I heard a scraping sound after you revved it.
Is there anything rubbing, scraping on the flywheel/clutch assembly?
What about the pilot bearing for the transmission input shaft?

It sounds like a scraping more then an internal bearing with out oil. The engine will not have the noise at start but after couple of hard acceleration. If I turn the engine off when noise is present and then restart the engine, guess what, the noise is gone. I got a new V belt and try to see the results tonight. Thank you all for the suggestions

Got my sleep back. Thank you guys. I replace the V belt because the first one was to tide. Also I originally block one of the exhaust manifold holes with a plug, which got loose. New belt and the new plug made my engine sound like an engine should sound.

Im48, I'm glad to see hear you've sorted out the problem, I know the feeling of finding a strange sound and not knowing where it's coming from. I have a vibratory sound coming from under my car that has been driving me up the wall trying to work out what it is/was. Finally I worked out the other day that the muffler has a slightly loose baffle in it.

A bit of a side track here but since your problem is sorted I guess you'd be cool if I diverted a touch.
I need to ask you about the cam wheels on your engine.
I noticed that they are red. Question being as I've always thought of getting a gold coloured set made up or bought - are they an anodised/plated product or did you paint them?

To paint the wheels I used red caliper paint after I sand blast the wheels. Only time will tell. I use the same paint on the cam covers. From my manufacturing experience anodized will be the best because will not do any dimensional change.

Good point about the dimensional change.
I might keep hunting for gold anodized ones or wait until I can afford to get some made to order.

Why would the dimensions change unless you paint the toothed belt section, which would be pretty stupid in the first place?

question about the exhaust manifold holes. Do you mean one of the bolt holes or did you replace the manifold and now have a little 'port' that is not covered by the manifold e.g. located towards the front of the engine?

Stupid or not was much easy to paint the inside, outside and where the belt is resting,
As far for the manifold, I have a 79 manifold. I removed all the pollution control system. There was a pipe going from the manifold to somewhere. I removed the pipe and plug the hole with incorrect thread type. I believe I should use M22 or M21
All the bolts are in place.
