Oil Leak Head Gasket?
Oil Leak Head Gasket?
I have a 1979 2000. It is leaking oil out of the manifold side of the motor. I cant see quite where, but it is appearing just below the manifold in front and rear. Only starts leaking after motor warms up. Of course one spot leaks right were it drips on the header pipe and smokes like crazy. I have tightened all the head bolts on top of the motor. I added some oil stop leak hoping this would help maybe has helped a little bit. It is also drinking antifreeze. I am afraid I have some major problems. Any ideas would be great I am not much of a mechanic. This motor sat for at least 6 years. I was hoping the gasket would swell again.

Re: Oil Leak Head Gasket?
How much oil? Is it only weeping, or is it leaking, ie: dripping oil? A couple of the manifold studs on both sides screw into an oil gallery, but they don't leak enough to leave a puddle! The easiest thing to do is give it a good clean around where you think it's coming from, with degreaser, so there is no sign of oil. Go for a run around the block, when it cools have another look. If it's coming from between the manifold and head it's not too hard to fix, if it's coming from between the head and the block, it's your head gasket and that ain't going to swell to solve your problem. Is there any oil in the radiator, or air bubbles when the engine is idling?
Cheers,
Mick.

Its leaking, it will leave small puddles. I haven't noticed any oil in radiator but have not inspected closely. I will have to check for bubbles also. If it's coming from between the manifold and head how would you fix this?

This could be the seal on your distributor shaft, they can leak quite a bit of oil, and drip on the manifold.
