Where can I find this throttle linkage??

Post by johnk63366 »

My 72 Spider never came with a linkage for throttle cable to carb and now I have replaced the carb with a DMSA, but have no idea how to hook it up to the throttle cable. Does anyone know where I can buy a linkage like this or similar???? What do I need to make the connection??

There are two throttle assemblies for carbureted Spiders. Your '72 uses the linkage that attaches to the firewall with rods and levers. Later models used a cable with a bellcrank mounted on the exhaust cam cover, which carried over to the FI cars. This is the linkage shown in your photo.

The early style is problematic because the firewall side of the linkage is fixed, and the carb side moves as the engine does. Since there's no cable to flex and absorb the engine movement, the idle ends up all over the place.

It looks like you want to adapt the new bellcrank to the old firewall setup, and I don't know if this is possible. Unfortunately for you, the gas pedal and interior linkage is also different early vs. late, so you will probably have to replace from your toe to the carb. But these assemblies are plentiful and easy to obtain. The hard part is removing and installing the gas pedal rod, which requires temporary disassembly of the steering column. Not a big deal, but mark with paint the original location, so your steering wheel goes back on correctly.

Whoa... sounds confusing and I had no idea there were differences. So since I replaced the original carb with a DMSA, I'm assuming I can't use a "rod and lever" type of linkage? The picture was just of one someone else sent and not necessarily what I am looking for, just looking for what's going to work for my set up. Pulling the steering column and all that I"m not sure how to do. Does anyone have a description of how to do this?
Thanks.

AAAAAAAAAA......... Anyone please help!! I need to find a throttle assembly. I guess that's what it's called. I am trying to hook up gas pedal cable that comes through the fire wall to my DMSA carb. I have no linkage between the two and need to find what will make it work. I've searched the internet everywhere and can't find a place to buy it. Someone tell me where I can buy what I need. Is it an F1??? not even sure what that means. Is it something else I need??? I am desperate... Please help...

Moderator, if you can provide some help I would appreciate it too. I am so at a loss and don't know where else to turn. I am desperate to get my Fiat running and this is all I need.... Please someone provide me with a direction on where I can purchase an assembly...

Waiting in despair...

I'll ask my group if they have an extra.
You want one like in the picture, right?

the picture is something oddball i have never seen on a fiat. I never had any issues with the rod and lever system. I even modified mine for a dual carb set-up. The FI (fuel injection) set up would be a much more difficult fit. either way, you've got some fab work to do.

Please take a look at the parts pictures below to determine what you need. If you go with a cam mounted bell crank I think you will need a 77 to 85 pedal assy.

What do you have now? Any pictures??

72s are supposed to have a rod operated system.

My '73 model has the exact same throttle bracket installed on the cam cover. When I got the car it had a universal steel braided throttle cable installed like this one: http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr-Gasket/720/565 ... Id=1358571. The cable didn't have a real good design for the end that attaches to the bracket, so I replaced it with a 24 inch universal Lokar brand cable like this one: http://www.lokar.com/product-pgs/thrott ... ables.html. The Lokar cable has a threaded piece that goes on the end of the steel braided portion of the cable that screws into the throttle bracket. This design seems to work much better. The only problem I ran into is that the Lokar cable has a ball stud end (attaches with a set screw). I ended up using the end from the original cable as it has a hole on the end, and I could attach it to the cam cover mounted bracket by slipping it over the existing bracket post and retain it with a cotter pin. I know it's kind of hard to describe, so I'll be happy to take photos tomorrow if needed.

This option works great on this car, as there's no way I could drive the thing with solid linkage, and the engine movement moving the throttle lever. I know you originally asked where to get the manifold bracket, but I thought I'd share my experience with the cable. I believe Allison's Automotive has the bracket that attaches to the cam cover, but I'm not certain. Check out this link: http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/image ... inkage.jpg. Maybe Mark can chime in and confirm as the photo isn't the greatest.

Good Luck
Josh

Well, good evenening to everyone. I thought I would post a reply to the throttle cable issue, as I seem to have an issue with my automatic carbed 79. The problem is that the kickdown cable end is broken off so it is not attached. Drawings that I have looked at show a telescopeing rod link, but my linkage only has a solid rod with threaded end. My thought is that the original carb was replaced with a unit set up for manual trans. The kickdown cable emerges from the passenger side of the engine, unlike some drawings I have seen. The mounting bracket is still attached to KD cabel, but can not determine exactly how and where to mount it. I would like to get the proper setup for this if anyone can guide me or provide parts.
Thanks, Terry

He needs items 2 through 7, 9, and 13 on the top diagram IF
his DMSA carb has a ball stud and the linkage rotates in the same direction as the original carb. Only someone who has actually put this carb on an early car can verify if this is possible. Elsewise, he'll have to replace the pedal and everything else from a Spider that originally had the DMSA.
