Small leak in Diff.

Post by Italchic »

OK so now I find a small leak in the rear end diff. after driving a while. Looks like it may be the gasket. Is this a big job to replace? Is it something I could attempt, or should I take it to a shop?

its a bit messy
just pick up a gasket and sealer
remove it cleanit up real good
use the sealer on the cover only
let tack up a little
reassemble tighten up in a star pattern
and fill :D joe
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Is a fairly big job if you are not used to doing such things. And messy.
How much does it leak?? Leaks are part of life. If it is leaving puddles in driveway, then it indeed needs fixing. If it is wet underneath but still full, no worries.

Doing the front seal or the wheel bearing seals aren't that hard. The pain in the butt thing is taking it the stuff apart. If it's the front seal, You'll have to get the drive shaft out of the way. So you'll probably have to take it off. Then getting under the car will be the fun. Do you have a lift? I just did all this stuff. I was told they all leak a little due to the design of the splines and the way the seal is. Check out this post.
