Torque for rear main seal cover

Post by drumbeater »

I can't find this in my manuals anywhere. Also need a recommendation for the rear water jacket cover. I'm putting this engine together and just got done having to drill and back out a broken bolt for the water jacket cover. I'm scared to move any farther without specific torque specs. I figured 20 ftlbs wasn't too much, guess I was wrong. :(

Those can be tightened "by feel"

I made an educated guess and stopped at 14ft lbs. Nothing snapped. That's what the water pump bolts are spec'd at.

M6 bolts (seal housings, water pump to block, etc.) should be torqued about 8ft-lbs. Even grade 12.9 M6's should not exceed 11ft-lbs. These are for dry threads, lubricated should be roughly 70% of these values.

If you're torquing the water pump bolts to 14lb-ft this is too much.

Be careful, even with small threads. It might not seem likely but you can easily bend/warp the cast aluminum housings. Also make sure you use a washer under the head to spread out the load (you'll also get more accurate torque readings)
