New Carb, Rotten Eggs. Related?

So I removed all of the emissions stuff under the hood when I installed my new EMPI carb on my '79 Spider. Now it stinks to high heaven when I drive it. I think it's a bad cat, but did I do it or was it just a coincidence? What can I do about it, have a muffler shop cut that kitty out?

All fuel has sulpher in it, some more than others, that is what the rotten eggs smell is. Cat is not the cause. I've got all sorts of tech stuff on this issue around somewhere, old brain just doesn't remember where. Must think.....

Try a tank of ethanol free gas and let us know how it smells.

Ok, get this. I fixed the mix problem, and still noticed the smell. I went into the trunk to get a tool, and WOW the smell was strong there. You guessed it, the smell was coming from the battery, which was hot and making a whistling sound! Yikes I think it was ready to explode.

This car has a new alternator, so do you think I'm safe to assume this was caused be the previous alternator or something else?

What is the voltage reading at the battery? I'd check the water level in it, it may have boiled everything out

Hot smokin' batteries are SCARY. Put on gloves and glasses. Get a fan blowing in the trunk.
"safe to assume.." you are not safe, and do not assume anything. Like twas said, check the voltage.

Ok, 18+ volts at the battery. Does a '79 have an external voltage regulator or do I have to replace the alternator?

Ok, so I found a local place that had one voltage regulator for my alternator. Took the whole thing in to have it checked on their machine. The machine said "bad alternator, replace" and they tried to sell me the whole alternator. I asked if I could put the new voltage regulator in my alternator and check again, and low and behold, it passed all tests. The VR they had was supposed to be brand new, but it was all greasy like it had been installed before. They gave me 10% off for the dirt and guaranteed the part was new.

Anyway, about 14 volts at 2500 rpm at the battery, just like it should be. Too bad everything that goes wrong smells like rotten eggs!
