Cool air from where?

I have a carbed 1.8 in my 81' and was looking for a good spot to take cool air from, right now I just have the foam filters, sucking engine-bay air, not the best in the summer time! I was going to make up an aircleaner box for the carbs out of fiberglass and was curious as to what you guys are doing. My jaguar and rover take air from the drivers side wheel well, is this the best spot? There is that hole beside the radiator but I dont know if there would be influence in this location from the air hitting the radiator and picking up heat prior to entering the intake...hmmmmmm
