Hose to where?

Post by Italchic »

The carbon filter canister on my 71 Spider has a broken/missing hose on the warm air purge inlet. According to the manual it looks like it goes to the exhaust manifold, but I can't find any type of fitting where it should attach. Where does this hose go and what should I do with it?

There should be a connection at the bottom of the canister that goes to the gas tank vent line. If your carb has a float bowl vent there will be a connection on the side of the canister for that. On the top of the canister should be a smaller diameter vacumn line that is attached to a port on the carb. The port on the carb should be above the throttle plates.

Your vapor cannister is probably similar to the one on my '70 spider. The large fitting on the bottom has a big hose that cirlces around to be close proximity to the exhaust downpipe flange, and just picks up heat from the downpipe. Mine terminates in a steel tube (open in the end so that hot air can enter by convection) that has a little flange on it, and the flange is secured by one of the nuts that holds the downpipe to the exhaust manifold. See these old pics:

Mine is the original hose that has somehow survived for 41 years. I think it is some kind of amazing rubber covered by a cloth fabric.

Thanks!!! Those pictures were great. That set up looks exactly like mine. So basicly it just sits there so warm air can entrer. If thats the case then I guess I just have to get a new piece of hose and try to figure out a way to attach it near the down pipe, is that right?
