Any Tranny install Tricks?

Any help appreciated. While re-installing my 5 speed tranny in my 81 Fi. I had a hell of a time trying to get the thing installed due to such a tight space. Finally had to undo the lower engine mounts and jack the front of the engine up. The bell housing just keeps getting stuck. If only I had half inch more clearance it would be easy. Any tips would really be welcome as I want to remove and refit one more time. A jack is useless due to the lack of space to get a clean run at it.
