aux shaft

Post by royce71 »

I have a broken aux shaft and would like to keep my mechanical pump, I have an extra shaft. What is involve in switching out the aux shafts or should I just go electric? Then after posting this I took out the aux shaft without trying very hard, now I can't get the new one in, any ideas?

Does it need a little "persuasion"?

Most people cut the aux shaft and plug the hole. Hard to believe yours is bent. On mine, everything it hit gave before the shaft did. The lobe did show uneven wear though.

Actually I think the PO cut the shaft, but I would prefer a mechanical pump if possible and I have 2 extra shafts and I bought a new mechanical pump before I knew it was cut as the PO left the mechanical pump in place.

CAREFULL!!!! If the aux shaft is broken, where did it break? The shaft sits on two points/journals? You pull the shaft out easily enough, does not take any extra pull or anything like that BUT if it is in fact broken and the new one does not go in,perhaps the back part is still in there.
I recently helped a fellow with the same problem. Took the intake manifold off. Took the mechanical fuel pump off and could then feel the back of the aux shaft. I was luck to get an easy out in the oil passage way of the back of the shaft and tried to spin and pull but no luck. Ended up falling into the crank and eventually the oil pan. So jacked the engine up after undoing the mounting nuts and dropped the pan and dug out the back of the shaft and the botton of the oil pick up that was broken off as well. Make note as I was told not all year aux shafts were interchangable if using a mechanical pump. We were working on a 79 and was told earlier shaft lobes might note be compatable.

The new one goes in all but maybe .5cm, also I had my finger in the fuel pump hole feeling around and didn't feel anything. But maybe I should check again.

I've seen used shafts that are slightly bent from contact with a connecting rod. Put it on a flat plate and roll it, the bent ones are obvious. I'm assuming you have the oil pump drive gear out?

No I don't, is that why I can't get the other one in? How do I get it out?

I took the oil pump drive gear out and its still not going all the way in, I rolled it and it doesn't seem bent and it goes in and out of the old block fairly easily. Should I force it in? The motor it came out of is 132 034 16125M I was told it was from a spider but I can't find these numbers on Mirafiori. Also there is no hole for the fuel pump. Not even a blocking plate.

Any way to show a picture? No mech. fuel pump access?
Try and advance the engine a tad, very small chance the #2 con rod is down and blocking? I'd guess you would have turned the shaft while trying to slide it back in.

This a picture of an extra block I have where there is no mechacnical pump access however it did have an auliliary shaft with a lobe for a fuel pump and looks like the right size for my 2.0 but doesn't quite fit, is this a compatible block?
