Try this again. It was over a year ago when I refilled my carbon canister. I am pretty sure I did not take photos, sorry.
I am trying to remember what I did, and I will try to explain. It is a 77 spider 1800 with a cylindrical plastic canister.
I carefully cut the top off all the way around the cylinder about 3/8" down from the top. It is spring loaded. Took the top off and the spring, if I remember correctly is a type of check valve inside the can pushing down on a plate that seals off the charcoal below. The mid section is full of charcoal. I dumped the stinky old charcoal, and replaced it with fresh charcoal that I bought in the aquarium section at the pet store. Then I clamped everything back together and epxoyed the top back on.
Had to clamp it because the spring wants the top to stay popped up. It was kind of difficult, but it worked out. I put a very large hose clamp around it where I made the cut and epoxyed it for extra strenght. So I think how this works is a hose comes from the carb (into the side of can) and from the fuel tank (into the bottom of can) and go into the charcoal. Then something (vacuum maybe) makes the top check area open and allows the gas from the charcoal into the carb tube that goes to the pcv valve inside the carb?
Thats a real grasp at straws for a description, but maybe it will open up some more dialog from those who know more for clarity on this...
