EGR Valve removal?

Post by KalamazooJohnny »

I took out my EGR valve and bought a plug to put there instead. When I took it out, engine coolant ran out all over. Is that hole suppose to be full of coolant?

Which holes did you plug? (where did you get them?) I have a '77 and have been searching for plugs for the exhaust manifold and for the intake manifold but it is an odd metric size so I have had no luck yet. I have removed them to measure the threads and there was no coolant. I don't see how there would be.

the egr can't have coolant unless you removed the thermovalve in the intake manifold. That is a water jacket, hence the "thermo" part of the name

Yeah, my terminology is off I guess. I took the thing with the 2 tubes out. It sits on the center of the intake manifold between the carb and the engine. It is a metric 18 x 1.5 thread I think. I bought the plugs at Advance Auto. They are oil plugs. So Mark, am I not suppose to remove the thermovalve and plug it? There is suppose to be coolant under there? The thread did not look like a tapered pipe thread, so I put a little gasket seal on the threads when I plugged it. Am I doing something wrong by removing that thermovalve?

There is supposed to be coolant under it. Plugging it fine, sealer is fine, if you live somewhere that does not check such things.
