There's a number stamped above the oil filter on the engine block. A 1438 will have a number that starts with 124AC (e.g. 124AC.040). A 1608 will have a number that starts with 125BC.

You should do a search on the Mirafiori Engine Manuals. There is good information in them on how to identify various engine types.

If you are not able to read the markings due to rust, paint, grime etc., there are 2 visual dfferences. The height of the block from top to bottom is just under 10" for the 1438cc, and about 10.5" for the 1608cc. it's not very easy to make this measurement unless everything is off the block, however.

The easiest visual difference is the cranshaft pulley. When looking at the front of the crankshaft pulley on the 1608cc, you will see a big nut (larger than 1") that holds the pulley in place. When looking at the 1438cc engine, you should not be able to see the nut that holds the pulley in place, since the pulley includes a centrifugal oil filter that incorporates a cover on the front of the pulley. The cover is held in place by 6 small screws (6 mm thread, 10mm socket size).
