rattle under the stick shift

have a rattle.... i believe it is right under the stick shift..it only happens at around 4000 rpm...no jerking or loss of power is going along with it.... just irritating... before i tear into everything i was hoping for a direction or maybe it has happened to someone else

Where the output shaft of the transmission exits the housing, there is a metal cover or cup that covers the rear seal of the trans housing. Mine comes loose and will rattle around, and I have to use silicone to 'glue' it to the shaft.

this is a long shot as the post is old, but did you ever get a fix for your rattle issue? seems i am having the same problem on my 1980 spider and it is driving me crazy. let me know.

a rattle can occur between the upper and lower shift levers or if the lower shift lever is loose in the transmission
