Thought I would share some info and pics of my single point distributor seal repair. First sign i knew the seal was failing was oil coming out of the weeping hole at the bottom of the bowl of the distributor housing. From there it leaked onto my exhaust header causing a lot of smoke. First check your timing and where your distributor rotor is positioned. I also made a mark where the dist met the cam tower. Removed the dist retaining bolt by moving the coolant reservoir forward enough to get a stubby wrench in there. Removed the dist and also the cam covers to check cam lobe clearance.
Gear pin removal. Remember that the pin comes out and goes back in in one direction. Use a punch and hammer
Seal crumbled when I tried to remove with a hook/pick
New seal. Don't have the pics of the new bearings
Gear back on and oiled pin going back in
New Gasket
Installed everything in reverse of removal. Don't forget to put some grease on the distributor shaft lobes and check breaker gap.
