Plating Parts
Plating Parts
I've learned some new things here about blasting all the old paint and/or rust off of parts.
But I haven't seen a lot about having them re-plated if you aren't painting them.
Is it expensive? And what do you prefer to re-plate them with? Zinc, powder, etc? Is it fairly easy to find a local company if you live near a big city?....just any insight you have about the re-plating process.
Thanks!

Re: Plating Parts
What are you wanting to plate? Plastic, chrome, anodized parts?

I saw a Jay Leno's Garage video once with a review of a chrome spray: http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/spr ... e/1232328/

Re: Plating Parts
I have some experience w/ this. I purchased a Caswell plating kit a few year ago for re zinc plating my various parts. But soon found a local shop who would do the job. Generally rule of thumb is not to blast things before zincing... as it makes them dull. Clean as them as well as you can and the plating process generally does the rest.
Good luck

Re: Plating Parts
If you are talking about real chrome, my advice is to leave to the professionals. Chromium is highly regulated. There are health risks involved with chromium not only to yourself but to others through the contamination of water and soil. Some cities have outright bans on chrome plating it is that dangerous. If you spill it or it gets into the water table or sewer system you could be liable for the cleanup or sewer line replacement.

Anyone know if you can buy this stuff anywhere? The chromesolutions.de website has no info and no updates for 6 months. Other searches for spray on chrome mostly turn up "businesses" with no addresses, no prices and dubious contact info.wikkid wrote:I saw a Jay Leno's Garage video once with a review of a chrome spray: http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/spr ... e/1232328/

I hate it when stuff like this happens! This is the best I could find, but it doesn't look too promising:

Re: Plating Parts
My way of thinking is if you plan to keep the car, why not get it done right? Chrome sprays are going to look like a spray and not last long. Of course, the day and time money is always an issue, but depending on what your plans are for your car, I'd save my money and find a reputable company.

Re: Plating Parts
It depends, too, on the state of the base metal. My chrome windshield frame is deeply pitted by rust in one spot on the interior side, so I doubt it would be worth re-plating.
