The New Floridians -- '75 Spider

Post by Zulu »

Greetings from Kissimmee, Florida!

My dad and I just purchased the 1975 Spider pictured below. It's an okay car; it has lots of rust issues and what looks to be a nonfunctioning alternator, but the transmission and engine are solid. We look forward to working through these issues and learning more about the automobile. This forum has been a huge help the past few days as we have researched the growing number of items that need to be remedied on our Fiat. We are looking for another '75-ish Spider to buy to complete the father-son aspect of this venture; hopefully this time we will have a better eye for what exactly to look for.

Nice looking car! I lived in Kissimmee way back in the early 70s. It sure has changed since then!

We would love to go for a spring drive and meet other similarly afflicted owners, perhaps we will even have a second Spider by then so my son (Zulu) and I don't have to fight over who gets to drive!

We are looking forward to this father & son's project (my 9 yr old is excited about it too). The plan is to find another Spider as close to the same vintage as we can and restore/modify them together. We have already learned a great deal from this site, and working on the first one. This one will need new shock towers (just found a good set), right floor where the lower tie rod attaches, and I just dropped of the voltage regulator, and the "new" alternator to get the diodes replaced if necessary.

Welcome to the site! Now you still have time to sell your 75 so you both can do the right thing and buy 82's. This will show your superior taste to the other members of the forum.

We should schedule a nice meet up at Old Town some time and try to get the Florida crew together.

Good looking car. Welcome. Test the alternator before buying a new one. A lot of electrical issues are related to corrousion of ground wires. With that said, an altenator upgrade once all electricals are working is a good move for early spiders.

We would definitely be up for a get together at old town! I am out of town on business for a week or so but when I get back we'll have to see what's a good day for everyone.
I took the alternator and voltage regulator to an alternator shop and had them tested. The alternator tested good but not the VR. I got a new solid state one to put in when I get back.
