Thought about posting in my current topic, but thought this may be of use to someone in the future.
My workshop and Haynes manual aren't as clear as I need, to check cam timing. Does anyone have a detailed diagram or a link? Mark explained in great detail, I should have written it down, I'm more of a tactile learner.

Maybe this will help you. Here is a picture of my 1608 after the bearing spun during a race. The engine is on a stand, upside down, with no oil pan so it may look funky seeing a pit cart on the ceiling of the shop:
On the cam pullies, I have noted the two holes on each pully that need to be aligned with the pointers. disregard the blue swipe of paint. They are meaningless.
Now, look at the auxilliary shaft pully. You will note two holes that need to be aligned to the tensioner bolt above the pully. This is around 1:30 or 2:00 o'clock position. It is imperative you get this aux shaft aligned properly because there will be interference between the fuel pump cam lobe and the #2 rod end cap bolt.
Note where I have circled the timing mark for the crank pully. I have no belt on this engine so we moved the crank to gain access to cap bolts. The mark should be around the 2:00 o'clock position, not the 7:00 o'clock position. Here is a picture of the timing marks to show where your crank will be positioned to be at TDC. The bottom, longer mark is 0 degrees.

The location of the timing marks on the cover, and the tight angle from which one must view them, brings to mind an MG Midget my brother used to have - as I recall, a dental mirror made timing possible on that car.

It looks that way when I tried taking a pic of it, but it's not hard at all to see the timing marks when using the timing light.
