idle with help of choke only

Could someone help me troubleshoot? My '69 124 does not start with the turn of the key, takes a little coaxing. New battery. Engine turns fine,I usually start it periodically, it's not driven daily. Once started I push the choke in gradually, but after a time I think car should run without the choke and push it in all the way the engine dies. It restarts right away. Engine is stock 1438cc, no upgrades or modifications. I appreciate the info this forum shares. Thanks.

if it sits alot, the idle circuit in the carb is probaby gummed up
