engine won't stay started

Post by mik »

Starting my Fiat first time in about 2 yrs. Manually put gas into carb using the pump spring, engine fires right up. Once fuel burns off engine quits. Able to keep started each time about 15-25 seconds. Any thoughts where to look first. I have drained tank of old gas and replaced. Thanks for any assistance.

Is fuel getting to the carb? I'd disconect the fuel line to the carb, put it in a can or something and crank the engine. I'd think fuel should be in the container,if not, Why (filter?) if so then others here with carb experience would chime in,but I'd guess a gummed up carb from fuel sitting from a couple of years.

Thanks, did disconnect fuel line and gas is coming through. when I use the pump spring to let gas does get into the carburetor and the car turns over, it's keeping the gas flow to the carb that seems to be the issue. thanks for the response

if you're sure the fuel pump is filling the carb, the jets are probably all gummed up from 2 yrs of varnish

I neglected to do something I should have when I emptied the tank and that is disconnect the fuel line to drain any old gas that was still there, I will give that a shot. do you suggest taking the carburetor apart or can I do the job with a carb cleaner?

Success, got it started and ran it for about 10 min. shut down and restarted. Seems to be in good order, no noises, no spitting or missing, knock on wood.
