Injector cleaning
My 1981 FI has been sat idle for about 4 years and I'm having trouble getting it started. I thought the problem was a faulty fuel pump so I installed a new one with a new filter and made sure the fuel lines are free. The engine makes an attempt to start for a few seconds then dies. A competent mechanic friend of mine checked the car and he is sure the ignition is fine but he believes the injectors are blocked. We disconnected the air filter and sprayed easy start into the engine and it ran for about 30 seconds which would seem to confirm his diagnostic. How big a deal is it for an amateur mechanic to take out the injectors and try to get them clear? Thanks for your help. Charles

you'll get the best results if you remove them and have them professionally cleaned. Avg cost would be about $100 to have the tested,cleaned and flow matched once they are out

Thanks for the advice. I'm just a bit intimidated by the idea of taking the thing apart! I'll try this weekend and let you know how I get on. charles

Did your mechanic check to see if the injectors were pulsing? Having the injectors checked and cleaned is a good idea, but if they aren't getting the pulse signal they still won't work.
If he's a compenent mechanic he no doubt did the check, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure.

Ive cleaned injectors myself a few times, not on a Fiat though....i didnt know 124's were meant to have injectors
Basically i click them open with a 12V power supply and hook up a hose to the injector and a spare Bosch pump i have and shoot straight injector cleaner thru them for 30 seconds or so, or until the spray pattern looks nice and even.
Ive also clicked them open and sat them in an ultrasonic cleaning machine for 30 miniutes, Then sprayed thru them as above.
Injectors off the rail obviously.
Never had an issue, but if you can get them done for $100 a set thats a bargain.

If there is any flow at all Chevron Techron may provide all the cleaning the injectors need. Be sure to purchase the concentrate.
My `77 is, of course, carbed. But one tank of Techron resolved all the fuel issues even after sitting for four years.
I know I sound like an advertisement, but this is truly amazing stuff. So much so that Yamaha repackaged it and sold it as "Ring Free." But be aware that it cleans out so much from the entire system that an oil change following use is recommended.
