Distributer problems

Post by Rob80Spider »

I have a 1980 FI 2000 Spider. Before I start, keep in mind I have zero mechanical skills. I'm in the process of replacing the exhaust cam housing gasket. What size is the bolt or nut that holds the distributer in and how do I get to it? While I was taking it apart I noticed that the wires going into the pickup assembly are really fraile. I've removed the two screws that hold the assembly down but I can't get it the pickup assembly out. Do I have to remove the distributer before I can replace this part? I guess it doesn't matter since I have to remove the distributer to get the cam housing off to replace the gasket. I'm kind of lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

By the way, does anyone know of a mechanic in the KC area that has experience with the Fiats?

The nut is a 17 mm or a 13/16 also works. I find a stubby wrench works best because of the tight quarters. You'll find it under the vacume advance module (little silver thing with a small rubber hose leading to it).
The wires do get fragile with time and the electrical pick-up has to be replaced periodically. I'd really recomend getting a manual and as you have asked, do the removal / replace evolution with someone that has done it before or can talk you through it. It is not difficult for someone with a few cells of mechanical aptitude. Many here , myself included, find working on these cars a form of therapy(what I tell the wife) but really to putter and enjoy a cold unit of installation fluid

I find it easiest to use a 17mm crow's foot on the dist. Be aware that when you replace the pickup, the gap is critical as is the orientation of the magnet
