Broken distributer roter- 1979 spider

Post by Shazam »

My distributer roter broke and turned into a blender. Destroyed the cap and pickup. To my wisdom, I replaced the rotor, pickup and cap. Turned the key and the car didnt start up- not even close, just makes a sputtering sound. Checked the timing and it seem to be off a few degrees. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Did you set the gap of the pick up correctly?

Don't forget that #1 is really #4 or something like that when it comes to setting the dizzy cap.

Yup check both those things point to #4 at TDC. Did you inspect the pickup wiring? Many times it is frayed.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

Thanks for the replys. When I bought the new pick up, was told to install the same way the old one came out. There was one instruction included which basically said to place the stripe side down. There was no metion of gap. So can someone share the gap size and I will re-try. Also if cylinder #4 is at TDC, should the timing marks align? It appears that the crankshaft timing is off 1 or 2 degrees.

The gap size and procedure is in the manual. Online manual at http://www.njfiats.org/joomla15/images/ ... trical.pdf
