Polyurethane Bushes Upgrade

Post by Lefrenchy »

Has anyone here upgraded the original rubber bushes for polyurethane ones?
If so, which one did you go for?
What improvement (if any) did you notice?
And finally, if you fitted them yourself, how difficult was it?
I am only on my first project and am not really sure of what i can or cannot do on my own before i start throwing the spanners through the windscreen and ask for professional help!!
All advices will be VERY appreciated!

I would not bother with them as the are prone to squeaking and have less flex then rubber ones which translates to a noisier, stiffer ride. If your going to race it and want no flex you can get some derlin ones. Otherwise my recommendation is to buy the complete arms and save your self time and frustration.

I just bought new bushings and had them pressed in. What do you know. They fell right out. So getting the whole control arm might be the way to go.

I went with full polyurethane when I did my rebuild on my a-arms and control rods - got them from Classic Ricambi. They are slightly more difficult to install, but no big deal since both rubber and the poly have to be pressed in. (I have access to a press and did mine myself).
As long as the contact surfaces get a coating of grease during control arm re-install, squeaking shouldn't be an issue - my suspension doesn't squeak at all. I am extremely pleased with the handling.
Brady, it sounds like in the control arms that the bushings fell out of - the wrong size were used (if I remember correctly, the long control arms use the slightly bigger bushings and the panhard rod and short control arms use the slightly smaller bushings).
If you decide to stick with the stock rubber bushings, I have a full set of brand new bushings that I'll sell you cheap! (Got the rubber ones before I found the poly ones).

Kevin, if Brady is not interested in the bushings, send me a PM as I am going to be replacing all the bushings on my 81 very shortly.

Wayne,
I got the poly bushings (front a-arms and rear control rods) from Classic Ricambi.
