My '71 1400 has a large lack of power. It lags at lower speeds and takes forever to get up to highway speeds. However, once at highway speeds it seems ok. Could the secondary circuit in my carb be the fault? mechanical advance in my distributor? timing?

Lack of power
Re: Lack of power
I have a '78 1800 that lacked a little power. I did a compression check, which seemed fine but after putting the plugs back in I noticed that I was loosing compression from around the plugs. They were not seating properly and letting air escape from around the threads. A new set of plugs and a little thread lock solved that problem. I immediatly noticed an increase in power.
Re: Lack of power
Almost certainly NOT a problem with secondaries, they are not open except on really hard acceleration.
Probably not a problem with dist advance, although that is easy to check with a light, and should be checked.
I would bet your carb primary or idle circuit is at fault. Has it always been like this?? When did it start?? How does it idle?
The tiny amount of compression that might seep by the plug seals could create a tiny power loss, but would not create a large lack of power.

Re: Lack of power
I think it was a plugged, or slightly plugged jet or passage inthe carb. I drove it and after about 10 min, felt a sudden increase in power which has yet to go away. But thanks for the info.
