I am strongly considering doing a valve job on my 77 Spider. I have never attempted this before but I am fortunate to have a neighbor who has had experience building racing engines in both North America and Europe. He offered to guide me through every step of the way but insists that I do everything myself.
I have a 34adf carb that a bought 3-4 few years back and I have been told that the jetting in this carb is all wrong for my otherwise stock engine. My neighbor insists on adding a brand new 32 since thats what my engine was designed to run. He also suspects valve seal dammage from running to rich. I do have allot of smoke on start-up.
Above all he insists on checking, double checking, and tripple checking the torque at every step of the way. And to have a qualified machine shop have a look at the head for possible resurfacing.
I was wondering if anyone can provide me with a parts list of what I will need to tackle the job. So far I thought of Valves, Valve seals, valve springs, new carb. I already have a torque wrench and my neighbor informs me that he has all the specialty tools, like timming gun, valve spring compressor etc etc.
Any advice before I order parts is highly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 77 Spider head rebuild
I will be doing the same thing in the future. The one thing I see that I would like to do is install bigger valves. I won't have an experienced expert guide me through though. New head bolts are always a good idea.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

Re: 77 Spider head rebuild
How many miles on the engine?
Valve seals yeup Perhaps valve guides if lots of miles. Valves themselves? Do you know if the head/valves have been done before. A fellow here took the head off his scorpian and the valves had been done once if not twice and there was not much to work with, I gave him a set from one of my 2L and ended up working fine. Big valves are nice, bit more work in dealing with the seats on the head(machineing the seats). I'd spend the few bucks and have the head surfaced regardless, a few thou off, then you know what you have to start with.
Valve springs? perhaps some with more experience here can chime in,but perhaps if lots of miles on the engine, otherwise check their compression,I think one of the manuals gives some idea as to how to check.
The 34 adf is a water choke. what is the 32? 34 I'd guess you might have to source a heaterpipe from a later car with the small port added and another port on the intake manifold. I think that is what I have to do if I change the carb on the 72 I'm doing.
Shim tool? some shims after it is all done?(older Volvo is the same diameter)
Cam tower seals- nice to change when the head is off the engine, timing belt (or two)
Gaskets of course.
And installation fluid
