I hate to jump in at this point and maybe I missed it, but what happened to the timing marks??? majicwrench has asked several times but there doesn't seem to be a clear resonse. Just my opinion, but I think if they have not been lined up yet, you should at least try it before you take it to someone. Ignore the white paint marks unless you know what they were put there for. If the valve timing isn't right it could be enough to leave the intake valves open just enough on the exhaust or compression strokes to cause a little backflow through the carb. The same as a bad or burned valve would do. And it could happen suddenly if you were shifting and the belt was a little loose it could have jumped a few teeth and cused the sudden problem. As we all know, this is common when belts and chains jump.

I am not familiar with the plastic cam gears Mark mentioned, but as he said, one of them could have moved on the camshaft so I would also pull the bolts and check them when you align the marks. It very well could be a cat problem and I am not dismissing that, but the timing marks have to get fixed anyway so why not do it, then chase the other possibilities if still runs like crap?

Do what you want, but I would hate to see you take it somewhere only to have them simply align the marks and charge you a few hundred bucks. You can do it yourself for free.

Just trying to help,
Jeff
