Hi Brady
What kind of media and sandblaster are you using for the blasting?

Re: More progress
I have a Clarke media blaster. It is a 10 gal size. I paid $130. for it. If you get one and have a good compressor of at least 80 gal or a 2 stage compressor . Then I would get a 20 gal size. I don't know what sizes Clarke sells. I know Eastwood has different sizes but I think they refer to them in pounds. I think this Clarke will hold about 75 pounds of media. The media I liked using the most was the medium grade. Fine grade for like fenders and such. I had a lot of rust and the medium grade broke down like a fine grade eventually. I reused the product several times. I threw a tarp down and swept the media up and poured it through a swimming pool screen to sift it. It worked very well. I think I paid about $90.00 to do the whole car. Don't get the course grade. It doesn't work well with these small machines. It clogs up and will definitely ward something if it did get through. Don't pay anymore than $10 for a 5o pound bag of media. The brand I used was New Age Media. They say you don't have to use a respirator with this stuff. I used one and I would recommend getting one. Good luck!

Re: More progress
Do you think you'll ever be able to get all of the sand out of the car? I hate sandblasting very much and have to give you props for a job well done. I hope you have a good sand blasting hood, man that stuff gets everywhere, I think I still have it in my ears!

Hi Trey,
It's funny you say that. Even though I wore a welders hat under my cheap hood. I still got that stuff everywhere. I had to wash three times while in the shower. What's worst is getting that stuff in your eyes when the plastic shield moves. That hurts. I'm glad I got that part done. I already got all of the media out of the car. All I did was use my leaf blower and blew it out as I turned the car back and forth. It took about four or five times of rotating the car which took about an hour. The hardest part was where the trunk goes through to the front body. Most of it fell out when I turned it upside down. I have the car in the garage now. I wouldn't have put it there without it being cleaned first. I was lucky this last week. We had awesome weather. I'm glad I blasted most of the car. I found a lot of thin and holy metal which I will attend to as soon as the car gets etched. I wanted to do the car this way because I wanted to know there wasn't any hidden rust. Plus due to the fact I didn't have a driver in the first place. I can't wait to get it on the road. My next project is awaiting. I'm going to take the other Fiat I have and cut it in half. Take the center of the front wheel forward and weld it to the center of the back wheel to make a Fiat trailer. That car doesn't have a title or an engine. So thats all I could really do to it.

What? I can't understand your plan but I'm really intrigued.Take the center of the front wheel forward and weld it to the center of the back wheel to make a Fiat trailer.

Re: More progress
I had been using my Grandfather's blaster. It's similar to the style that's sold for around $100.00 everywhere. I decided I wanted to try one with the vacuum recovery system. About all I could find that wasn't in the $1000.00 range was the one listed on eBay for around $280 plus shipping. It works about as good as I though it would..........just o.k. I started with glass bead, but it wasn't coarse enough. I needed to blast the rear end, so I decided to purchase some of the aluminum oxide from Harbor Freight. This worked a lot better, but I wouldn't want to use it in a conventional blaster with no recovery as it's quite expensive. My Grandpa had been using standard silica sand with a respirator with his. It seemed to work well but with all the warnings about the sand I decided I didn't really want to go that route.

Re: More progress
That's sounds like a good idea. The only thing is where do I get the money? I'm scrounging around to get the first one done. LOL-Histerically.
Re: More progress
I can actually say that my car is rust free! I'm finished putting on a zinc phosphate coating. Now I can start the prep for priming with MasterSeries. First I have to clean the garage. Here's a pic of before and now after.
Re: More progress
How come you didn't do the inside of the fenderwells?

Yeah Craig,
I showed you the pic at the FFO.
Bwilson,
I didn't go into the fender wells because the undercoating was put on so well. It didn't need done. I inspected it and everywhere that was on good was like new underneath. Even in a couple areas that it was coming up was still like new metal. The bottom took me a long hard week to clean up with the scraper before I could even media blast.
Newell,
You should give the New Age media blast a try. Get the medium. I think you'll like it. It only costs about $10

Re: More progress
Hey Man, Can you dig up a photo of the back of your car with the round tail lights installed, I am going to be doing this to my car and I wouldn't mind seeing an example of this. The two things I really dislike about the fiat are the protruding tail lights, the license plate lights and believe it or not I don't like the pointy corners on the back of the car either. I'd love to smooth them points down a few inches personally. But i'd love to see that photo. Thanks
Re: More progress
Here you go. When I put the lights in. I made them all straight. They don't follow the curves of the body. If you decide to do this. Let me know and I'll pm you the steps and pics.

Re: More progress
MNspiderman, have you seen HalG's modified Spider? He raised the rear deck area and got a look I think you'd like, without the pointy fenders. Take a look here:
