Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Trouble in paradise...again. timing belt too long. Great so now what so we have. NO numbers on block other than cast into it 132ABO 263870. Both stamp locations are blank. Is it a 1600 stock motor? Does a 2.0 Head fit on a 1600? Is it and 1800 that was swapped with the 2.0 FI stuff? The new timing belt had part #4371507 on it the old one has #4182426 and the new tensioner bearing is a bit larger that old one.
Wondering if I should just take my 1800 spare engine and stick it in there and put the manifolds on it instead. Lucky so far I have not installed the intake yet.
On a side note this is how I got the nut off the crank shaft. A wobble extension and 130 psi with impact. Couple of brapps and it was off. Tried a pipe method - useless. I did have the left side sitting ontop of the mount stud as I did that to get the intake out and also rear trans support is out to change its mount so the engine tilting back helped.
Also found seal wear in the gear shaft. Should put a seal saver on it but I cleaned it up and we will see how it goes. Has to put a sleeve on the aux shaft on the last motor due to this kind of wear and still leaked oil even with a new seal . If you have the time its best to use a sleeve and save you some heart ache down the road.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
The old timing belt p/n is for a 1600/1800 belt.
The crank timing gear in the pic is a pre-76 type, so both of these show that it is definitely not a 2000.
If the block says '132' then it's either a 1592cc or 1756cc. A 2 liter head would fit on either, but it would lower the compression ratio.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Great, add fuel injection and lower the compression. I wonder why they didn't stick with just leaving the 1600 head and putting the FI manifolds on it?. Without an engine # I don't even know if its a 1600 or 1800. Hum, I don't know what to do now. Sent you an email about the belt and tensioner. Looking at the parts it only shows one style of tensioner bearing. Are they larger now. I guess Ill just get the stupid thing running again and come up with a game plan to maybe just stick my spare 1800 engine in at some point. Why do people do crazy swaps like this.vandor wrote:The old timing belt p/n is for a 1600/1800 belt.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Not a football fan so today I got the single reservoir and new blue hoses connected to the new master, add brake fluid and got brakes now. At some point I will go thru the whole brake system.
I thought I would try to remove the pumpkin and axles to see where the metal bits came from I found when draining the rear axle. But no luck as my super heavy duty snap ring pliers were no match and broke the ear off the too. Ill have to find another pair that will stand up to it. I put it back together for a rear end swap in the part car another day. Drain the trans and it looked really good and nothing surprising cam out of it. Went to get my GL1 90 and could not find it. Must be hiding or I gave it to my friend for his Fiat as I didn't think I would be buying another anytime soon.
Removed the doughnut and trans mount. The taller mount I got looks way too tall to put it back in so Ill order the stock one and see how it goes.
Got to place ANOTHER order for the parts to get this thing going with the correct timing belt and mount. Im sure Ill order more while Im there browsing.
Who won?

There must be something stamped somewhere...
> Looking at the parts it only shows one style of tensioner bearing. Are they larger now.
Only the 1438TC tensioners are different, all the others are the same diameter. Until '79 or so they were narrower, but then Fiat came out with the wider version and superseded the wider one for all the 1600/1800 engines too.
So as long as it's not a 1438, the tensioner will work. Based on the part number on the timing belt, it's a 1600 or 1800.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Ok thanks for that reply. I can take a pic of the tensioners if needed but both of the old ones I have are smaller diameter than the replacement. Also just found out the intake gasket I got has a T shaped middle water port. My old one is just an oval and would be better than the T style to seal up that area. Ill give you a call in the morning.
Thanks Brian

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
The second pic is the area just above the oil filter block? That's where a 1600/1800 would be stamped.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Yes that it. The other is above left motor mount. Even removed the fuel pump block off plate to check above there, nothing. Must have been ground off at some point?

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Just thinking, Is it possible its lower and they changed the 2.0 oil filter housing to this block and its blocking the numbers?

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Isn't the 2L block a bit higher/taller than the 1800? The timing belts are different.
I think you had a 1800,perhaps measure the block only height on each.

Re: 73 Fiat Spider 2.0
Those are the cast numbers but the true numbers are STAMPED in the flat portion just above the oil filter housing or flat portion just above left motor mount.
