It's alive!!! Thanks to Denise. I got my steering idler from Denise yesterday and threw it on, fired it up and took her for a drive. There is one small issue, it doesn't like to stay in first gear. I am assuming it needs a rebuild. How hard are these things to rebuild? Should I lookd for a donor trans or have someone else rebuild it?
Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
expect to spend 1k to 1500 to have someome rebuild it. Hard parts have gotten pretty expensive unfortunately

When I got my '82 it didn't have 4th gear (popped out), I knew this when I bought it and figured I'd drive it as a 4 speed until it got worse. Then when 2nd, which had been grinding going into, finally went, I got my rebuild done by Jon Logan at:

He's got a very good reputation, and deservedly so. The price was very reasonable, and now I have a 5 speed!
You can get a step-by-step rebuild manual and buy the parts if you want to go that way, I just don't have the patience and figured for that job I'd leave it to a pro.
Good luck.
Ron

Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
Hey Rook1,
I havent been on the site much lately. I saw that ad for the car you bought and was way tempted...especially the older Fiat with those crhome bumpers. I live in Sandy just south of SLC. There is one Fiat mechanic left in SLC area. He has been working on and racing Fiats and Alfas since the 70's. His name is Will. His number is 801-531-0238. He is on 300W and about 900 South in SLC. A very soft spoken person but incredible with the Fiats. He has maintained my 82 turbo since it was new. You can give him a call about your tranny. He has about 10 Spiders sitting in his yard that he uses for parts. He may have a tranny.
As far as parts I havent found anyone here except the Ferrari dealer. I prefer to buy my parts from International Auto in VA. They are quick and decent prices. For brake pads and stuff like that believe it or not the Auto Zone has had most of this in stock. There was a wrecking yard that had tons of Fiats and ALfas but they went bankrupt and who know s what happened to their inventory.
Your car looks pretty good, awesome that it runs!
I have my 82 turbo, a 77 spider, and a 75 spider for parts. I dont know much about my 75 parts car but it does have an engine and a tranny in it. Not sure if 75 tranny would mate to a 71?
Nice to meet ya! There are a few of us around. I see some spiders now and then.

Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
Thanks Alan, I will check him out. Good to see some Utah people around here. From what I have read all of the 5 speeds are the same so it should mate up with my 71 just fine. If anyone knows for sure let us know. If you are interested in selling it give me a call. I will PM you my number.

Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
Why didn't I think of hiring a model when I took the pictures of my car to post?!
Are you thinking of staying with the yellow color? It seems like it is the least common color and I don't know why, it looks great on these cars.

Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
I am considering going back to the original color for the same reasons you mentioned. The original color is Colorado Yellow which is very similar to this.
But I am also toying with a deep red or even black. But I do like being different and this would be different.

Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
I prefer the brighter yellow. What muffler is on the car? is it a supertrap?
Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
Nice ride Rook. Why can't I find a deal like that for $500? The wheels aone are at least $300 plus the body looks decent. Yellow looks good on your car.
I am exactly like you were, looking for a European car, either Triumph or Fiat likely, though I almost dropped the dime on a classic Mini last week. I'm still thinking about it, but if I saw a car like yours come along, that would make my decision easier.

Yes it is.So Cal Mark wrote:I prefer the brighter yellow. What muffler is on the car? is it a supertrap?
Thanks. Not to bad for the money. I had been looking for a long time. I had the option at one time to buy the one Micah bought for $700 but I passed as the tranny was on the lawn and the guy and his "gang" selling it looked anything but honest. Knowing now how easy these things are to work on I should have bought it.miragesmack wrote:Nice ride Rook. Why can't I find a deal like that for $500? Re: Reborn Fiat owner in Utah
Question. Are either my front or rear bumper "over riders" upside down? If so which is correct?
