What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
just a thought... but have you done anything with the stock exhaust manifold on the other side?
if not, what are you gonna do with the belching exhaust gases that will be spewing out of your intake manifold when you remove the EGR valve?

No, so I guess I shouldn't take off the egr valve then?...unless there's another option...

Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
the massive vacuum leak would be a larger issue. If you remove the valve ya gotta put a plate over the two holes
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Mark,
Can you tell me more about what you mean about plugging the holes with a plate, or does anyone have a pic of what you are referring to? Thanks.

Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
you have to seal the two holes under the egr valve; one is open to exhaust, the other to intake vacuum. Make a solid plate with two bolt holes to seal the large holes, make sure you use a gasket.
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
since you are going partway to a major performance enhancing modification... why don't you go all the way and eliminate most of the hassles you are encountering?
swap in a de-smogged 1800 intake manifold.
are you positive that this is even acceptable in your area? smog equipment removal is not gonna be legal in many areas

Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
technically it's not legal in any areas, there are federal laws concerning emission equipment
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
those laws don't necessarily affect all readers at this forum. and, in many areas, its a don't ask don't tell situation.
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Mike, I'm now actually looking for an 1800 manifold.mbouse wrote:since you are going partway to a major performance enhancing modification... why don't you go all the way and eliminate most of the hassles you are encountering?

This is from my states DMV website regarding emission testing:
What motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles?
These motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles:
Vehicles that are less than two model years old, or more than 25 model years old.
Diesel-powered vehicles 8500 lbs. or less and Diesel-powered vehicles 8501 lbs. and more registered in the NYCMA area that are required to have the emissions inspection for diesel-powered vehicles.
Electric-powered vehicles.
Motorcycles.
Vehicles that are registered as farm equipment or that have historical plates.
Homemade vehicles or custom vehicles that are registered in the Upstate Area.
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
exempt from local emission inspections doesn't mean it's legal to remove the equipment, it's just that you need a Federal Marshal to enforce Federal laws. Just a technicality
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Ok, after a little improvising with a 13mm wrench and pliers got the pita rear bolt off. Will post some pics of all the crap I found under the egr valve. Let me go steel my sisters digital camera and take some shots.
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Alright, here we go:
What do I do clean that black muck out of the egr intake holes. Just scoop out as much as I can then cover with a plate and gasket? What sort of plate a piece of aluminum or steel sheet metal?
Plus what's the big hose that I labeled ? in the second pics purpose?
Thanks guys for the help so far!

Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
thanks for the voice of concern, but this forum is read by folks in Sweden, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, and Costa Rica to name a few that i recall off the top of my head. I am certain none are held to the federal standards or laws you refer to.So Cal Mark wrote:exempt from local emission inspections doesn't mean it's legal to remove the equipment, it's just that you need a Federal Marshal to enforce Federal laws. i am attempting to hedge my answers based on the possibility that these folks might have a smog equipment infected car.. and just might wanna hear some advice about removing the smog equipment. i did originally warn that the procedure i was referring to may not be legal everywhere. that shoulda be 'nuff.
technically, in the USA you might be correct. but, in the larger world of Fiat 124 Spider ownership.... there ARE others that don't apply to the USA laws. and the two litre carb'd engines run much better without the smog equipment present-pure fact regardless of location. it's up to the individual owners to decide if they wanna chance getting caught by the federalies.
as i said before my advice, Fiat88, may not be legal for you to follow if you are attempting to street your vehicle in the great 48. you may, as some have, find it quite satisfying if you dunn have to answer to the smog police on a regular basis however.
Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
if you are gonna use that intake manifold, you are gonna wanna plug those holes. Sure, a piece of steel or aluminum will be fine... as long as it is not so thin that it will bend or warp in 200°F temperature.
when you get the opportunity, consider replacing that 4-1 exhaust manifold with either a 4-2-1 system or a set of headers. eliminating the source of the exhaust gas across the front of your head would be a great thing.

Re: What should I do with these vacuum hoses?
Just for the heck of it, can I use intake cleaner to try and clean some of the crud out of the egr device?
