Thanks for posting the diagram, htchevyii, but I'm afraid it doesn't include the part we're talking about. If you have the Service Manual, it's on page 21-11, and referred to as both a spring, and a spring clip. International Auto has the same diagram as you, and the Vick's rep told me that they don't have it referenced in their manuals. Caribou Imports includes one in their 8-piece Shifter Pivot Kit, but even they don't show it in the diagram they provide on how to assemble the parts. http://www.esportscarparts.com/Fiat/shifter.htm I think that Mark can resolve this, once he responds.

I have it. I looked on my spare eng and the clip was there. I didn't see it before.
You can do this even if you already put the drive shaft back on. I just did. All you need is to take the three bolts off the bottom and let the shifter sit on the drive shaft. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and hold the clip as shown on a slight angle. Push the shaft over to give yourself more room. Put the spring to the bottom and try to get the inside of the clip to catch the shaft opening it up so you can push in on. This will take a few tries. Just don't force the clip open or the clip could be damaged.
Clip goes on from the bottom up and hangs over the top from the inside.

Patience is a must
Whalaa! done. Now tighten the bottom back up.

I got it all done and then realized the shifter was sitting really high. Wouldn't you know it. The nut on the bottom came off and the shifter came out. I remember reading when Tulsaspider did his and his nut came off so I made sure I tightened the nut on mine really good. It still came off. So I had to take off the drive shaft to get it all back in. I would suggest using a new lock nut to replace the nut on the shifter.

Thank you, as well, azygoustoyou! Now my only remaining question is, where do I get a clip to put in? I don't have an extra engine, and I really don't need to replace all the other parts just to get this clip. Can anyone help me obtain one so I can finish this job and enjoy the rest of the summer? Thanks!

So, all this "shifty" talk made me curious about my shifter, and what condition it was in. I took off the bottom cover and dropped it out. Took a while to get the right angle, and I had to rotate the quibo to just the right position to clear the shifter, but I got it out.

And, lo and behold, the last thing I expected. It was perfect! All the parts where there, and in the right order. The plastic ball looked great with no cracks or chunks missing.

So I put it back together with no drama. Well, technically, it is missing one part, that tiny little anti-rattle clip a few posts above. I can add that later, no sweat.

Does anyone lube this assembly? Mine looks like it has has some oil squirted on it before, bUt I would think a heavy grease would stick to the parts better. Suggestions?

Okay, I have an anti-rattle clip on its way from Auto Ricambi (they're the only company I could find who listed one, and the price went up $2 after I ordered). Maybe I'm blind, but I still can't tell exactly where this clip goes. The diagram in the Fiat Manual shows a clip directed to the inside of the shift tower, but that's no help. I really appreciate the pictures, Az, but I'm still a little confused. A little further clarification will be appreciated.

Looking down at the shifter you'll see a square part to the side toward the driver seat. The clip slides up from the bottom and hangs over the top from the inside on the square. The shifter has the part that sticks outward toward the driver seat also goes in the same area putting pressure against the clip spring eliminating vibration.

That's what I though, Az; I just couldn't see the top part of the clip in your picture. I'll tell you, that manual really did not do justice to this application. It seems like a lot of guys have this problem, and the suppliers don't seem very aware of this part as well. Thanks for all your help; I'll let you know when I get this all sorted out.

Well, oddly, this just happened to me. Shifter popped up while entering the mall and had to push it down to get the gears and drive home. Figured the nut must have fallen off, but no, it was the bottom cup (not the proper name) - center portion of it broke out! Took one off the parts car and back on the road. Man, that is tough pushing up (around the drive shaft the cup, the washer and then the nut. Must have fallen on me a dozen times! (While Deb is pushing down on the shifter - patiently, I might add -- for about an hour.) I should add that the shifter seems much snugger and nicer now (that nice "snickety - snick" feeling). Can't figure out why. Either the piece was in place or broken off I would think.

Isn't it nice to have spare parts. I replaced my shifter handle and a couple of the cups plus the clip spring from a parts tranny.
I would use a lock nut on the bottom if I were you.
