Timing Light Power Connector

When I set the timing on my Spider I power my timing light with one of those booster jumper batteries. Easy!

I've always just connected the positive lead from my timing light to the + side of the ignition coil, then grounded the timing light to the coil pack, engine or frame. I've never used the alternator post to supply power a timing light or tuneup tach. Just curious but what's wrong with getting power from the ignition coil?

I cut off the power clips on my cheapo timing light and spliced in a power plug for the cigarette lighter. Works well. I used to clip to the stud on the alternator, but managed to short out the clip during timing one day. More excitement than I wanted.
