That's what I read in different sites aroung the net... carbon deposits may be restricting the valves...
I removed the carb yesterday and cleaned cleaned it off and sprayed cleaner into all the orifices as well as injected compressed air. Replaced the carb and it ran much better but the idle solenoid was faulty as found today.

Right now I'm afraid to use any water into the intake any more. The only way to tell that the valves are faulty would be to remove the head and have them checked... is this an easy task?

pulling the cyl head as an assy isn't too bad of a job, but why not check valve clearances first?
It's not the carbon restricting valves, the carbon can loose from the top of the piston. It then gets banged around in between the piston and cyl head, causing the noise. I'd certainly do more diagnosis before pulling the cylinder head.
