Back to the key issue. Is the door key the same as the ignition key? Could I just take a door handle to the locksmith rather than the steering column?

And thanks for the advice on the books.

the ignition key works the ignition only.

the door key is the trunk key is the glove box key... unless of course, a previous owner switched a tumbler or two.

REALLY?

They can key door / trunk / glovebox to the IGNITION key? I never knew that!

My '83 came with two "decent" ignition keys (niether original), and once good trunk key...but NOTHING for the doors or glovebox...

Not that I ever lock the car, but it'd still be nice to have everything work, you know?

Great news!!!! The new addition came with original papers which include key codes!!!! Now how do I get keys made?

There is also an update to the age. It is a 71 not 72. Better, worse same?

BTW 80* and sunny yesterday and 35* and snow today.

Like I said" Brrrr.
You should be able to take the key codes to any locksmith, they have the books to cut keys from codes.
You got lucky man.

Well I was able to get the ignition key but not the door/trunk key. The locksmith said if I bring him a lock he could make one for me.

I also found out what is needed for the steering. The damper/idler is broken and the center link is bowed. I posted up in the parts wanted section for these parts. I will check out the forum vendors if I can find them.

Just found the links mbouse posted on another board. Time to shop.

There are only slight differences between the 71 and 72. Not enough to determine which is better. You are, however, more likely to have the rare wrap around taillamps. They were installed in 71 and most of 72.
