you want to sand in a "x" pattern so you keep the bodywork flat. dont sand with the board parallel to your stroke, but have the board at an angle to your stroke.

Making progress. Entire car 1500 then 2000 grit wet sanded. Much smoothly and much less orange peel. Didn't expect to get 100% of the orange peel gone. I think that's too risky with the 6 out of 10 paint job.

Here's what I found in my basement and garage that I bought a few years ago and forgot about.

I didn't use the #2 because it said it required a DA polisher. So I used the new car glaze #5 on the hood and the ultimate compound on the front driver's side fender with terri cloth towels.

Here's the original paint condition.

Here's the passenger fender with nothing but the 1500/2000 grit wet sanding.

Here's the hood with 1500/2000 wet sander to remove most of the orange peel and the new car glaze #5 only.

Here's the driver's fender after wet sanding and then the ultimate compound.

I'm very impressed by the 1500/2000 wet sanding followed by the ultimate compound. And then I think I'll follow that up with the new car glaze #5 (says it replenishes oils in the paint) and then a waxing.
